A Better World through Open Education

Today registration opens for our two-day inaugural event hosted by the National Centre for Open Education Practice at the Otago Polytechnic. This event will focus on empowering Aotearoa New Zealanders through Open Educational Resources (OER) and Open Educational Practices (OEP) through digital transformation.

The symposium theme is social justice through open education and will include:

  • Making education more sustainable through Open Educational Resources
  • Leading change towards more open education
  • and Open Educational Practices.

There will be presentations, workshops and panel discussions.

Keynotes

Dr. David Porter is the Chief Executive Officer of eCampusOntario (Canada) and a long-time advocate for the benefits of adapting new technology to deliver educational opportunities, and been involved in open and distance learning since the 1990s. (a Virtual Presentation).

Dr. Cheryl Brown is Associate Professor in e-learning in the School of Educational Studies and Leadership at the University of Canterbury and co-Director of the e-learning Lab. In recent years, she has focused on the development of digital literacy practices and the role of digital devices in student learning. She is an active collaborator in the national research project on textbook affordability.

Oonagh McGirr is the Deputy Chief Executive for Learning and Teaching Services at Otago Polytechnic. Oonagh has considerable experience in strategic leadership for international tertiary education. She has worked in international tertiary education for nearly three decades in both public and private sector. She has established and led learning and teaching development, led on education strategy for multi-partner entities, devised, implemented and delivered staff development and upskilling programmes for higher education practice, and led on institutional Teaching and Learning accreditation and recognition.

Registration

The symposium is free for all Otago Polytechnic and University of Otago staff and students. For other symposium participants, there will be a nominal registration fee to help cover costs:

  • Full attendance: $70 (Symposium plus workshops)
  • Symposium: $50
  • Workshops: $20
